My Naturally Oily Adventures
In the world of essential oils we all have a story. Some reason that we were led to seek out natural alternatives to all the toxic chemicals in our daily lives. So rather than an “About Me” section I want to share with you a little about my story, my Naturally Oily Adventures so far!
I was raised by hippies so I come by my love of all things natural honestly. When I was 3 years old my mom and dad bought a hobby farm in the middle of nowhere Alabama. They renovated an old log cabin, planted a garden, got a dog, 3 chickens, and a handful of goats and set about to learning how to bale hay and plant soybeans! I grew up with limited TV (if you can call 5 channels and rabbit ears television), a German Shepard for a best friend, and free reign to explore several hundred acres of fields and woodland. I fell in love with the outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed my daily conversations with the critters that surrounded me, both domestic and wild. I learned to shoot a gun, ride a horse, plant and harvest a garden, collect fresh chicken eggs, and identify venomous snakes and poisonous spiders. To this day, my early childhood resembles my idea of heaven! But sadly, when I was 9 years old my parents divorced and couldn’t afford to keep the farm. So, we moved back to the city, gave away our goats and left my dog and chickens with the family friends that bought our home. I learned to be a city girl but never did grow out of my love of the outdoors. My later childhood was characterized by summers at the community pool, bike rides, and hiking the trails in the local state park but I started to lose touch with my inner hippy until much later.
Fast forward through the boys, the shopping, the makeup, high school and college, the engagements, the breakups, love and loss. It wasn’t until I was very much an “adult,” owned my own home, had several rescued dogs, and had met, but not yet married, my soul-mate (who is decidedly NOT hippy, crunchy, or granola – although I’m working hard at slowly converting him! lol) that I found myself getting back in touch with my natural roots. It all really started with the garden. My amazing husband would do almost anything to please me so when I asked him to help me build a garden he agreed. There has been a bit of trial and error but over the years we have gotten better at gardening and enjoyed watching our crops grow and adding new veggies from year to year! We got better at composting and started learned about organic pest control (there’s a steep learning curve that we are still on in this regard). That same year we started recycling more, setting aside all our paper, cardboard, and glass in addition to the aluminum, steel and plastic we were already recycling and were able to reduce our household waste to only 1-2 garbage bags a week. We watched food documentaries and learned about clean eating. We started buying as much organic meat and produce as possible at local farmer’s markets. We learned to read labels. We cut out processed food and thus our Adventures in Living a Natural Lifestyle really began!
On our 1 year wedding anniversary, May 19, 2013, my husband and I had a serious conversation and decided that it was time our family grew. We both knew we wanted at least one child and so we started trying to conceive. I wish I could say it was an easy journey. I eventually learned that I had PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and that’s what was causing my crazy hormonal issues and making it so difficult for us to conceive. I became hyper-aware of the chemicals that we are exposed to daily through our food, cleaning, and beauty products so I set about learning how to start getting rid of all the toxic chemicals in my life to not only help us conceive but to protect our future family from the dangers lurking in our own cabinets! I started researching natural ways to balance out my hormones, which had gone berserk while detoxing off 17 years of hormonal birth control. My face had broken out like a teenager’s and no store-bought product seemed to help so I started researching natural ways to cleanse my face and treat my acne. I started learning about essential oils. I quit using shampoo. I started making my own cleaning products. And suddenly it became an obsession!
Throughout my Adventures in Living a Natural Lifestyle I’ve tried many brands of essential oils, including store bought brands such as Aura Cacia (sold at Vitamin Shoppe and many grocery stores), Simpler’s Botanicals (sold at Earth Fare and other health food stores), Mountain Rose Herbs, doTERRA, and Young Living. These days it seems like every company out there has their own brand of essential oils! I can vouch from experience and direct comparison that there are differences you can smell just from opening up the container as well as the quality of the product. You really do get what you pay for! In early 2015, I began to really research more into the different essential oil brands to ensure that I was getting the best possible quality and therapeutic value. It was during this research that I fell in love with Young Living essential oils because of their Seed to Seal Guarantee and commitment to quality. I loved that they own their own farms and invite members and guests to come and visit. We buy organic and shop local as much as possible, fulling subscribing to the Farm to Table movement. So why wouldn’t I expect the same of my essential oil company!?! I had originally shied away from Young Living, and other direct sales oil companies, because I hate high pressure sales and thought that all Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) and direct-sale companies were all about pushing me to buy a product I didn’t want. But a dear friend who was involved with Young Living and a team of distributors called the Lemon Droppers showed me that it didn’t have to be that way at all! Still, it was with great hesitance that I purchased my starter kit in April 2015 and I initially thought that in no way would I ever want to become involved in the business
But my excitement has grown and after having an opportunity to make direct comparisons to other oil brands I’ve used previously, I’ve learned I truly do love my Young Living oils!!! I got this wild hair in June of 2015 and decided that I wanted to start blogging to share with others about my Adventures in Living a Natural Lifestyle. It started as a simple experiment sharing my adventures and misadventures in DIY home, health and beauty products with my family and friends on a Facebook page. Later, I decided to venture out into the blogosphere and got my very own WordPress site. My followers grew and suddenly my friends and family started coming to me to ask me about essential oils and for recipes they could use in their own home! So I thought I would extend my wholesale discount to friends and family. Pretty soon, people wanted to buy their own kits and start researching how they could use essential oils to help not only rid their homes of toxic chemicals but to find natural ways to address their families personal struggles. And thus, my business, Naturally Oily Adventures, was born! I’m a licensed mental health counselor by profession and I’ve worked very hard to get to where I’m at in my career and never in a million years thought I would be one to take on a side business but I honestly can’t imagine my life without Young Living in it. I am truly an Oily Addict and love researching new ways to use essential oils! Those who join my team get personal support, memberships to online support and Facebook groups, including my own personal (secret) group also called Naturally Oily Adventures, and resources to help you during your own adventures!
